Public Liability Insurance
Public Liability Insurance covers you if your work accidentally causes injury to another person or damages someone else's property. For example, if you damage a client's home while carrying out a repair, or if someone trips over your tools and gets hurt, Public Liability Insurance helps cover the costs of claims made against you.
Most real estate agencies and property managers in Australia require tradies to have Public Liability Insurance before they’ll send any work your way. It’s seen as a basic level of protection for both you and your clients, and it’s a standard part of doing business in the industry.
Professional Indemnity Insurance
Professional Indemnity Insurance is different — it covers you if a client claims they suffered a financial loss because of your professional advice, designs, inspections, or certification work.
Not every trade needs this type of cover. It usually depends on the type of work you do. For example, tradies who provide inspections, reports, certifications, or advice (like building inspectors, certifiers, or some specialist consultants) are more likely to need Professional Indemnity Insurance. If your trade is hands-on without giving advice or signing off on reports, you may not need it.
Combined Insurance
Some insurance providers offer policies that combine both Public Liability and Professional Indemnity into a single package. This can make managing your insurance simpler and can sometimes save you money compared to holding two separate policies. It’s worth checking with your broker or insurer to see what’s available for your specific trade.
In these cases, please ensure you select the "Both Public & Professional Liability" option when adding your insurance details in OurTradie. This will automatically update both insurance types with the same information and documents.
